Liisa Matveinen

Liisa Matveinen

Liisa was one of the very first students at the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department in the 80’s, and has been teaching there as well. Liisa has worked in many pioneering folk music bands, for example Niekku, Tallari and the infamous Swedish-Finnish group Hedningarna. She started Suden aika together with Tellu Turkka, and is still working closely with her. Liisa’s compositions with traditional runosinging lyrics have been sung by numerous choirs and a cappella groups. She teaches singing, lamenting and Kantele playing in Ilomantsi, Karelia.

In Suden aika Liisa sings and plays a 15-string Kantele and the Frame Drum.

In her free time Liisa weaves exquisitely colourful carpets, knits wool socks and picks mushrooms.
